MARCLAIMED
Integrated decision support tool for reliable and affordable application of managed aquifer recharge with alternative water resources in river basin and drought management plans
Starting Point
Water scarcity is one of the most critical problems to be faced in the 21st century. The decreasing water availability and increasing water demand is usually correlated to the deterioration of the ecological, chemical and quantitative status of surface and groundwater bodies. Ensuring the availability and sustainability of water resources is essential.

the
Project
Introduction
To address these challenges, the project is structured around three main pillars that guide its scientific, technical, and strategic development:
P-1: OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY: The first pillar aims to improve the performance of the MAR operation with AWR and the available water resources management, providing operational risk assessment in a climate change perspective.
P-2:ECONOMIC SUSTAINABILITY: The second pillar will ensure the economic feasibility of MAR with AWR through the implementation of model-based tools.
P-3: SOCIAL PERCEPTION AND REGULATORY FRAMEWORK: The third pillar combines technological and non-technological approaches that will be implemented and assessed at the 3 MARCLAIMED demo sites reaching up to SRL9
Objetive
To integrate Managed Aquifer Recharge with Alternative Water Resources in river basin and drought management plans enhancing the structural supply systems to climate change adaptation and resilience.
SO1: To achieve high level operational efficiency of MAR systems with AWR
SO2: To achieve economic and financial feasibility and sustainability of MAR with AWR
SO3: To support water utilities operators and decision/policy makers in planning (long-term) and operational (shortterm) purposes related with AWR management strategies.
SO4: To better understand the social response and effectively bring social awareness, acceptance and trust in MAR with AWR
SO5: To deliver a comprehensive regulatory framework filling the gaps in the actual EU policy of MAR with AWR
SO6: To ensure the availability and sustainability of groundwater resources
SO7: To promote the market uptake of the MARCLAIMED results
Methodology
MARCLAIMED is based on 3 main pillars:
I) operational efficiency achieving high level operational performance through 3 AI-based tools to: i) monitor and control AWR quality ii) forecast the water resources availability and iii) provide health, environmental and performance risk indicators;
II) economic sustainability providing: i) water scarcity indicator through a municipal scale water footprint tool facilitating decisions on water governance, ii) water security economic value of MAR with AWR through an insurance calculator tool, and iii) a cost recovery-based system;
III) social acceptance through: i) the deployment of societal actions to strengthen the engagement of national and EU policy makers in collaboration with a Community of Practice (CoP), and ii) the definition of EU MAR-lines to promote policy recommendations and boost regulatory framework.
To ensure the reliability, acceptance, and trust in MAR with AWR, a cutting edge and interoperable Integrated Decision Support Tool (IDST) will be built integrating the tools of pillars I and II and based on the feedback from pillar III and will provide solutions to tackle existing and emerging threats and support decision making and adaptation policies.
Key Tools will be developed:
i) MARVIS: Virtual sensing tool for near real-time water quality monitoring (RES1).
ii) PREDMAR: AI-based water availability and demand forecasting tool (RES2),
iii) MARAISER: Short and long-term MAR performance optimization tool (RES3),
iv) OASIS FLOW: Digital tool for municipal-scale footprint performance (RES4),
v) MARINSURE: MAR insurance value calculator tool (RES5) and
vi) RECOVER: Tariff setting for cost recovery (RES6).
The tools from Pillars I and II will be integrated in the MARCLAIMED IDST (RES7) to support AWR management strategies for increasing operational efficiency and economic sustainability of MAR with AWR, providing MAR-based risk assessment and mitigation measures and recommendations.
The MARCLAIMED IDST will be instrumental for project replicability and transferability by providing open and interoperable interfaces which will allow for simplified reconfiguration of system features.
