AQUAIBER-NET
Scientific Network on the Risks of Extreme Events and Pollution on Iberian Fluvial Systems: Application to Management
Project Info
Call: Redes de Investigación 2022 (RED2022)
Project starting date: 1 June 2023
Project end date: 31 mai 2025
THE
Project
Introduction
Freshwater systems in the Iberian Peninsula are increasingly affected by multiple stressors, including droughts, floods, pollution, land-use change, water abstraction, invasive species and climate change.
These pressures interact in complex ways, affecting river ecosystems, water quality, freshwater ecosystem services and socio-economic development.
AQUAIBER-NET addresses these challenges by strengthening scientific cooperation on Iberian river basins and improving the transfer of knowledge to water managers and policy makers.
Objetive
The objective of AQUAIBER-NET is to consolidate and expand a multidisciplinary scientific network focused on the risks of hydrological extremes and pollution in Iberian fluvial systems.
The network aims to connect scientific knowledge with management needs, support evidence-based decision-making, and provide practical insights for river basin management under global change.
Methodology
AQUAIBER-NET builds on previous research projects and scientific networks dealing with water scarcity, multiple stressors and ecosystem services in Iberian rivers. Its approach combines:
1. Knowledge exchange between disciplines including hydrology, geomorphology, chemistry, ecology, ecotoxicology, climate change, water economy and water resources management.
2. Interaction with water authorities, agencies, policy makers and other stakeholders to identify management needs and transfer scientific results.
3. Communication and dissemination activities, including workshops, policy-oriented materials, newsletters, a dedicated website and scientific publications.
4. Training activities for early-stage researchers to promote interdisciplinary capacity building in river science.
5 Collaboration with national and European projects to strengthen synergies and contribute to the implementation of water policy frameworks.
