THE
Project
Introduction
Spain faces increasing risks to water security due to economic growth, urbanisation, population increase and climate change.
These pressures are leading to growing water scarcity and more frequent and severe extreme events, including droughts and floods, with impacts on economic activities, citizens and continental aquatic ecosystems.
H2OSEG addresses these challenges by analysing water security risks in Spain and their implications for society, ecosystems and water-dependent sectors.
Objetive
The objective of H2OSEG is to identify and define the main risks to water security in Spain and propose alternatives to address them.
The project aims to restore the balance between water use, biodiversity preservation and the physical and chemical quality of natural aquatic systems by analysing current risks, categorising water conflicts, developing socioeconomic and climate scenarios, and proposing management alternatives.
Methodology
H2OSEG follows a multiscale and transdisciplinary approach combining national diagnosis, regional case studies and local conflict analysis. The methodology includes:
1. Definition of water security risk factors and moderators for Spain, considering biophysical, social, economic, legal and governance dimensions.
2. Development of a digital GIS-based framework to map water security risks across Spain.
3. Preparation of a catalogue of water conflicts, including their nature, actors involved and consequences for water security.
4. Development of climate, socioeconomic and territorial change scenarios.
5. Analysis of three case studies: Barcelona-Girona, Santander and coastal Cantabria, and l’Albufera de València.
6. Co-design and validation of a Decision Support System to help diagnose conflicts and assess management alternatives under uncertainty.
