THE
Project
Introduction
Water scarcity and hydroclimatic extremes, aggravated by climate change, are an existential threat to societies and nature in many parts of the world. Water-scarce regions have seen their annual GDP growth rates decline by as much as 2.5% due to water-related impacts, while droughts and famine have killed 650,000 people since 1970. At the other end of the spectrum, floods have killed over 250,000 people and caused over $1 trillion in damage since 1980, and could wipe as much as $5.6 trillion from global GDP by 2050. Strategies on grassroots household water security and hydrological disaster risk reduction can significantly enhance the capacity of societies to resist, reduce and recover from water scarcity and hydroclimatic extremes now and in the future–i.e., their water resilience.
Objetive
Three key objectives: ① grassroots partnerships that actively engage and empower local communities to develop community capacity and drive upscaling from the ground up; ② actionable socio-ecological science that assists local communities and other relevant stakeholders in accessing, processing and understanding relevant monitoring and forecasting data at the frontier of knowledge, and ③ Vertical upscaling through consultation processes with stakeholders at multiple levels.
Methodology
The project is built on three complementary building blocks
- Activity 1.1 MAPPING; Activity 1.2 CONNECTION, EMPOWERMENT, OWNERSHIP & CO-CREATION
- Activity 2.1 DATA HUB; Activity 2.2 MODELING SUITE; Activity 2.3 INTERFACE
- Activity 3.1 UPSCALING; Activity 3.2 STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT; Activity 3.3 FINANCE
